September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know…

> In the US in 2012, there have been:

  • 229,060 new cases of breast cancer
  • 241,740 new cases of prostate cancer
  • 28170 deaths from prostate cancer

> Prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death in American men.

> 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

> The average age of diagnosis is 67.

> More than 2.5 million men in the US who have been diagnosed are still living.

> The 5 year survival rate for:

  • Local cancer – cancer that has not spread outside the prostate - is nearly 100%.
  • Regional cancer – cancer that has spread beyond the prostate to nearby areas – is nearly 100%.
  • Distant cancer – cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body – is 29%.

Starting at age 50, men should talk to a provider about the pros and cons of testing. If they are African American, have a father or brother who has had prostate cancer before age 65, men should talk to a provider starting at age 45.

During the month of September, Dixon Center will offer Specials on PSA blood tests to men over 50 (45 for men at high risk), with or without rectal exam.
